Report: Beachline Bridge Tanker Explosion Remains Mysterious

Investigators have found few answers in the case of an explosive traffic accident in January 2011 that obliterated a Beachline overpass and took the lives of both drivers involved. A four-month investigation, in fact, likely led only to more questions about the Merritt Island, Florida, crash.

The accident occurred January 21, 2011, around 3 p.m. when a 19-year-old woman from Merritt Island, Florida, was traveling west on the Beachline. In the 15 minutes prior to the accident, she made three calls on her cell phone—all to the owner of the Ford F-150 that she was driving at the time—though it’s not known what she’d been calling about.

As the woman reached an overpass at North Courtenay Parkway, she lost control of the pickup truck and fishtailed into an emergency lane, where she sideswiped a tanker trunk that contained 8,702 gallons of gasoline. Both the F-150 and the tanker truck overturned and fell off the overpass before exploding. Gasoline continued to burn for an hour, burning the overpass beyond repair.

Both the driver of the F-150 and the 42-year-old tanker driver—a resident of Lauderhill, Florida—died in the crash.

Following the crash, the Florida Department of Transportation awarded Lane Construction $2.2 million to rebuild the overpass.

A 43-page report on the crash has yielded few answers—revealing that blood samples from both drivers did not indicate alcohol or drugs and that though the roadway was wet it was not raining at the time. The report did conclude that the F-150 driver was at fault in the accident, based on witness reports.

Car Crashes into Palm Bay House, Kills 2 Women

Two women were killed in Palm Bay, Florida, on Friday when a car crashed into a house killing the driver and passenger in the fiery collision.

The crash is the second of its kind this week, and as FloridaToday.com points out, indicates an unsettling trend in Brevard County: At least five accidents in the county this year have involved a car crashing into a house.

Friday’s accident occurred around 3:40 a.m. at the 1000 block of Nevada Drive when a black Chevy Camaro that was traveling north at a high rate of speed hit a tree, went airborne, and plowed into a single-story home. One victim was trapped inside the car and the other beneath the car when it caught fire.

The front entrance and garage of the home were badly damaged, but no one inside the home was injured.

Palm Bay Police Department Spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez told FloridaToday.com that the driver was going at least 70 mph in a 30-mph zone.

Toxicology tests on the deceased women are pending.

Earlier this week a 21-year-old lost control of her car on Bianca Drive and drove into a house. The accident ended in her arrest for DUI with property damage.

Other similar incidents include a January accident during which a 64-year-old man was killed when he drove into a mobile home in Cocoa; a May 14th Palm Bay car crash through a woman’s living room; and a June 10th crash that occurred when a woman backed out of her driveway and into a neighbor’s garage.

Looking to fix the problem, Palm Bay traffic engineers have examined the roads where these accidents occurred. However, Palm Bay Mayor John Mazziotti told FloridaToday.com, “You can put out extra police patrols, but what else can you do? If people are driving recklessly, what can you do to correct that?”

2 Teens Die in Immokalee Car Accident

Two teenagers from Collier County, Florida, died early Monday morning in a two-car accident on Westclox Street in Immokalee. A 22-year-old woman was also seriously injured in the crash, says the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 17-year-old male in a 2004 Hyundai Elantra was headed westbound around a curve on Westclox when he attempted to pass a 2010 Dodge Charger—driven by a 22-year-old female who had a 17-year-old female passenger with her. The man’s car hit the left side of the Charger and lost control, overturning twice before crashing into a utility pole and then a mobile home, ejecting him from the vehicle.

The woman’s car also overturned in the crash, struck a barbed wire fence, and overturned again, ejecting both the driver and her passenger, who died. The driver of the Charger was transported to Naples Community Hospital with injuries.

None of the three involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts.
