Safety Tips for the Holidays

Oh, the Griswold family holiday. Whether taking a vacation or celebrating Christmas, we have all delighted in the fictional family’s antics and mishaps. What might be funny on screen is anything but funny in real life. A bit tongue in cheek perhaps, the Griswold family is an accident waiting to happen. The scary news is that there are accidents that are typical around the holidays that may make good fodder for the big screen, but can result in devastation in real life.

Where it be house or property damage, or a personal injury of some kind, the holidays are always prone to more then just a few mishaps from time to time.

  1. Holiday Lights

Not only are holiday lights a hassle to untangle every year, but they can be dangerous if not taken care of properly. If you aren’t home to enjoy the tree’s lights, unplug them. There is no reason to have them on and flashing for hours at a time if no one is home to see them.

  1. Open Flame

There is nothing like the first beautiful fire of the season, provided that fire is in the fireplace. If you light candles, keep them in safe holders. If you go to bed or leave the house, don’t forget to blow out the candles. You may be surprised at how many people forget they have candles lit.

  1. Indoor Cords Outdoors

Indoor extension cords are made for indoors. Do not use one to keep your lights lit outside. Indoor cords are not made to resist water or condensation. If you need an extension cord to keep all of your lights lit, be sure to purchase one specially designed for the outdoors.

  1. Trees

If you put a tree up in your home this holiday season, make sure that it is sturdy and stable. Falling trees may not kill you, but they can cause serious injury if they topple over on a person or pet. Test your tree before you walk away from it to be sure that it does not wiggle.

If you are involved in an accident this holiday season, you may be entitled to compensation depending on the circumstances of the incident. This is especially true if you were injured outside of your own home. Call our personal injury attorneys today to discuss your case for free.
