Brevard County, Florida’s Cocoa Village is a prime spot for car accidents, according to a new report from the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization. Portions of the area’s Florida Avenue and Forrest Avenue are listed at sixth and ninth on the TPO’s annual Top 10 crash-rate list.
Also on the list is the one block of State Road 520 that connects Brevard and Delannoy Avenues.
“Since we started preparing this building, there were two accidents at the intersection,” said local business owner Chong-You, pointing at the State Road 520-Brevard Avenue stoplight. “We heard the noise from inside. If you try to maintain the speed limit, they will run you over.”
FloridaToday.com reports that the TPO’s list is instrumental when government officials determine where to invest funds for federal and state road construction.
“Once you know the causes, then you can identify countermeasures to try to correct the problem,” TPO Executive Director Bob Kamm said. “If 90 percent of the rear-end crashes are due to speed, then we can put in advance-warning signs, and we can get law enforcement involved. Are there more nighttime crashes when people aren’t seeing as well? Do we need more lighting?”
