Maria Fischer is always seeking to get out of her comfort zone, she is never afraid to try new things. This personality trait is something her parents instilled in her as a little girl. It started small with trying different foods growing up, then it turned into getting the courage to change career paths from medicine to law. Maria has always been a huge animal lover and growing up she dreamed of being a veterinarian.
She quickly realized that she wanted to have a career where she could help others and connect with people, so she pursued pre-med in college. Half-way through college, she spent a summer helping a family friend in his law office. She was introduced to a new way of helping and connecting with people. She saw how fearlessly he fought for all his clients to get the justice they deserved. This quickly altered Maria’s career course and she set forth a new journey of becoming a lawyer.
Maria spent a lot of her practice looking for positions that were people focused. During law school, she had the opportunity to work with former Florida Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente. Pariente had become a mentor, an inspiration to Maria as she learned so much about legal issues in cases but also about being a strong force in the legal profession. The hard work and perseverance Pariente had honed in on during tough parts of her own life, particularly when she had to appear for oral arguments while receiving cancer treatments, really motivated Maria to go the extra mile to achieve the results she wanted.
While working at the State Attorney’s office, Maria spent her time helping victims get the justice they deserved after being wronged by a crime. Now, at Steinger, Greene & Feiner, Maria helps those who have been injured get the help they need during this tough time in their lives.
One of the proudest moments Maria had in her career was when she successfully argued for a dangerous defendant’s incarceration on behalf of the State. The issued in question was whether the defendant’s actions violated his probation in an underlying case and came down to a very technical statutory issue. Maria spent endless hours researching this issue, learning all the ins and outs, and writing memoranda in opposition to one of Broward’s top criminal defense attorneys. Maria was successful in convincing the court, and the end result was that the defendant was given a prison sentence.
Maria had handled thousands of cases at the State, but this one was more of a challenge due to the legal intricacies and the fact that this defendant was a repeat offender for an offense that caused a danger to everyone in our community. Maria has always shown so much delicacy with each one of her cases, making sure no stone is left unturned. This allows her to fight fearlessly for the desired outcome of every single one of her cases.
Being a woman working in law, Maria has experienced issues with gender inequality, but she handles these situations head on. She says, “How you react when those instances happen is most important. If I am underestimated because I am a woman, I love proving them wrong and taking them by surprise.” Oftentimes, many clients seen their lawyer like a coach, looking to them for help and reassurance that their situation will get better.
Maria recognizes that many of her clients look to her for compassion and a shoulder to lean on when going through these difficult times that have shaken up their world. She is been able to connect with her clients on a personal level and sees how much of a difference it can make with the outlook on their current circumstances. It allows her clients to feel more comfortable and confident.
