Man Sentenced to 22 Years for DUI Manslaughter

Car accident involving multiple vehicles

MIAMI, Fla. – On a fateful night in June of 2013, Ervens Prudent attended a friend’s wedding. At that wedding, Prudent got drunk and chose to drive home. It is a decision that he will be forced to live with for the rest of his life.

As a result of his choice, Prudent ended the lives of two people in a fiery car crash. Prudent was recently found guilty of DUI manslaughter and sentenced to 22 years in prison. Following his release, Prudent will spend eight years on probation. The man, 29, will be 51 years old when he can once again call himself a free man.

According to reports, Prudent was attending a wedding at the Coral Gables Country Club. He drank vodka and champagne, and claimed to not have been impaired when he left the celebration. Prudent claimed that he fell asleep while driving.

Unfortunately for Prudent, video footage obtained shows him driving down Eighth Street just moments before the crash and in full control of his vehicle. Evidence was also presented showing Prudent to have had a blood alcohol content of .115, well over the legal limit of .08.

Judge de la O said, “Mr. Prudent, you were in complete control of your car in the seconds before the accident…he could not have been asleep at the time of the crash.” The judge also told Prudent during his sentencing, “You had many choices that night. You could have taken a cab. You could have called Uber. You were surrounded by friends at this wedding. You could have asked any of them to take you home.”
