Bike-Share Program Unveiled in West Palm Beach

If you are a commuter, you know what a headache West Palm Beach traffic can be. Local leaders encourage people to utilize alternate forms of transportation, but what if the bus isn’t convenient for you, and what if you don’t have a bike?

Anyone who wants to commute in a way that is eco-friendly or those who simply want to pedal around town for the afternoon now have a new option. The city has just unveiled its bike sharing program, all but eliminating the excuse of “but I don’t have a bicycle.”

Alice Bojanowski has been working with others to bring bike sharing to the downtown area and has finally seen her dreams become reality. 150 brand new, sky-blue bikes are now available for people to rent and ride.

The new SkyBike WPB program kicked off Saturday morning, and Bojanowski was one of the first riders. West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio was in attendance proudly wearing a “#ILoveWPB” T-shirt. The program officially began in front of a crowd gathered at Centennial Square and Fountain Park.

According to the mayor, residents and visitors can utilize the bicycles, not only for commuting, but for cruising the streets and the waterfront in a safe manner. “We’ve been trying to get this off the ground for a few years and to actually see it come to fruition is very exciting,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing these blue bikes all over the city.”

Interested riders can rent a bike by half- or full-hour increments. Weekly, monthly, and annual memberships to the program are also available. Riders can pay the rental fee at a kiosk near the bike rack. Costs range from $4 for 30 minutes to $24 for a full day. Riders can also pay using the nextbike mobile app. Bicycle stands can be found around the city in places like City Hall and Palm Beach Atlantic University.

Executive director of the Downtown Development Authority, Raphael Clemente, is excited that the bicycles are giving people another transportation option. “Enjoy the ride,” he told the crowd at the kick-off event.
