Dismemberment leads to Florida workers’ compensation lawsuit

A man whose body part was cut off in an industrial accident is asking for Florida worker’s compensation from his former employer, according to orlandosentinel.com.

The man was injured while working with a machine with a steel blade that is used to cut blocks of carpeting foam. He was not trained on the machine and is wanting Florida workers’ compensation for the dismemberment.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration is imposing fines of more than $40,000 to the man’s former employer and has found 10 serious violations after the incident which has resulted in the Florida workers’ compensation lawsuit.

School faculty denied Florida workers’ compensation

March 22, 2008

The Daytona Beach News Journal reported that faculty and students will be moving back into a school building two months after teachers complained about classrooms making them ill. Teachers are fighting to recover Florida workers’ compensation benefits for their suffering, but have met resistance.

The carpet in the school contained mold and has been replaced. The classrooms have undergone several cleanings and inspections, but teachers are still concerned.

The faculty is continuing to seek Florida workers’ compensation coverage for their medical expenses, even though they had been earlier denied by school district officials.

One consultant inspected the building and said that air tests have lead to contradictory conclusions because of the lack of standardized methods of inspection.

Officials said that their decision to move back into the school building was based on one particular report and the completion of some recommended repairs.

Six Florida Contractors Cited for Workers’ Compensation Violations

The Florida Department of Financial Services, Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Compliance has issued a report stating they stopped six work orders during a surprise enforcement sweep last week.

The sweep revealed several contractors were negligent in providing workers’ compensation coverage for their employees. Eleven citations were also issued during this sweep.
