“Traumatic brain injury” is one of those terms we hear used all the time from football commentators, in the news and even by lawyers like me. It seems kind of obvious what a traumatic brain injury is, but it’s actually more complex than you might think. There’s a broad range of traumatic brain injuries, and there are even more symptoms that you might miss.
A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can happen anytime you hit your head hard. Our firm often deals with TBIs after car accidents, but they can happen at work, while you’re playing sports or pretty much any other time you take a hard blow to the head. You could also suffer a TBI if your skull is penetrated by a bullet or some other object.
Types and Symptoms of Brain Injuries
The most common type of TBI is a concussion. This happens when your head gets bumped or hit, and your brain moves around inside your skull. Concussions are often said to be mild brain injuries, but the effects can be devastating if they’re ignored. What’s worse, a concussion isn’t always evident.
If you get hit in the head, it’s important to watch out for some common symptoms of traumatic brain injury. These include:
Not thinking clearly
Sensitivity to light or noise
Constantly feeling tired
Sudden depression or anxiety
There are other symptoms to look out for, but these are some of the most common. If you have any of these symptoms after getting hit in the head, you could have a traumatic brain injury.
If you think you have a TBI, you need to see your doctor right away. They can figure out how extensive the damage is, and what treatment you need. Sometimes you’ll need to stay in the hospital for a while, but other times you can safely go home and recover.
The most important part of that recovery is to get plenty of rest, and avoid hitting your head again. Your brain is really susceptible to severe damage in the days and weeks after a traumatic injury.
