On the eve of the inaugural Brightline train service, a woman was struck and killed by a Brightline train in Boynton Beach. Who is responsible for this Brightline train fatality? Who are the negligent and uncaring officials who make decisions which will lead to crash after crash, resulting in injuries and deaths?
It is virtually guaranteed that more injuries and more deaths will follow. It seems like every time we turn on the news, someone has been killed by a train.
The Brightline trains in Florida will be responsible for even more injuries and deaths than the existing FEC, Amtrak and Tri Rail trains that are currently running in Florida.
The Brightline trains do not use the same tracks that the Tri Rail trains use.
The Tri Rail trains that have been running for years have been involved in serious injuries and deaths on a routine basis. They run parallel to I-95 for a majority of the distance covered between Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties.
The Tri Rail trains, despite their use of isolated train tracks, still get into far too many crashes each year causing injuries and death.
Now, we have the disaster of a much broader scope waiting to happen. Its name is “ Brightline.”
It is so unfortunate, but it’s also it is so predictable. Running a high speed commuter train line through densely populated residential neighborhoods will surely lead to injuries and death on a regular basis. The recipe for this is firmly in place.
Who among our elected officials will stand up for the safety of our citizens and demand that this dangerous train service be halted before more needless injuries and deaths occur? Who will take responsibility for these deaths and future mayhem?
The problem is akin to the opioid addiction cases, but not in such a grand scale. Everyone wants to blame the individual that ended up in the path of a train. Unfortunately, walking and driving in South Florida adjacent to high rail system is like Russian Roulette. It is only a matter of time, and before the Brightline Service even began, we have multiple fatalities, a derailment and crashes.
At the beginning of the opioid crisis, the individual users were blamed for being the architect of their own demise. They were shunned as weak drug users blamed for failing to take responsibly and ultimately causing their own overdoses, due to prescription opioid abuse.
Now we know, there are many causes of the opioid abuse, including but limited to, the following:
Doctors received huge incentives like money, vacations, trips from manufacturers and distributors to push enough opioids “legally” beyond the realm of anyone’s imagination;
Coaches pushed medical doctors to prescribe opioids to their athletes, including coaches for middle school students, high schoolers, college athletes and professionals alike. It was expected for players to return to play, despite their injuries, by the overuse of pain medications.
A Society that criminalizes what is clearly a medical issue. Likewise, a high speed train, in residential neighborhoods, absent the most stringent of protection will continue to cause injuries and death.
