Did You Suffer Injury or Illness After Taking VIAGRA?

Over the past two decades, VIAGRA, Cialis and other erectile dysfunction medications have become a vital part of life for millions of men. Originally synthesized by Pfizer, sildenafil (VIAGRA) was the first effective erectile dysfunction pill on the market, and other manufacturers soon created their own — including Eli Lilly and Company, the manufacturer of tadalafil (Cialis), and Bayer Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmithKline, and Schering-Plough, the joint manufacturers of vardenafil (LEVITRA).

Though these manufacturers boast the ability to improve men’s personal lives with their product, what they often don’t discuss is the serious potential side effects that come along with the medication.

If you took VIAGRA, Cialis or LEVITRA and became ill because of it, you may be entitled to legal compensation. The VIAGRA lawsuit attorneys at Steinger, Iscoe & Greene are here to help. We have recovered over $1 billion on behalf of our clients. Call us today at (800) 916-8108 for a free, no-obligation consultation.

Complications Arising from ED Medication Use

VIAGRA, Cialis and LEVITRA are some of the most popular drugs on the market. Yet, they all can cause severe complications, some of which weren’t initially disclosed. These may include:

Vision loss: About 40 men who suffered from Non-Arteritic Ischemic Optic Neuropathy claimed they experienced sudden vision loss after taking VIAGRA. Similar issues were seen with Cialis. However, the drug manufacturers claim their products had nothing to do with it.

Hearing loss: After nearly a decade of VIAGRA being on the market, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested Pfizer add “hearing loss” as a potential side effect on their label after 29 men reported sudden hearing loss.

Heart problems: Because of the sudden blood pressure drop when using these drugs, some of the earliest lawsuits against the manufacturers involved complaints of heart complications, including cardiac arrest.

Though these concerns have been addressed by the drug manufacturers, they paint a picture of a long history of complications and previously unknown side effects. As such, it may not be a surprise that a more severe complication has been noticed in recent years: melanoma.

The Link Between VIAGRA and Melanoma

Melanoma is the most aggressive — and deadliest — form of skin cancer. In 2014, a study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine that showed a potential link between taking VIAGRA and an increased risk of melanoma. It was discovered that men who take VIAGRA may be 84 percent more likely to develop this sort of cancer. As such, it was suggested that the drug may inhibit the body’s ability to fight melanoma. After this study was published, the FDA added VIAGRA and similar drugs, like Cialis and LEVITRA, on its watch list of medicines with possible safety concerns.

Other studies have come out more recently that dispute the initial findings. Rather, these studies claim, men who have prescriptions for erectile dysfunction medication visit their doctor more often. As such, there is a greater chance issues like melanoma would been discovered. This link is called the “detection bias.”

Though the original study has been disputed, there is still not concrete proof that erectile dysfunction drugs are not linked to melanoma. Lawsuits are still being filed against the drug manufacturers, and “bellwether” cases are predicted to be heard sometime in the near future, which will determine whether there is enough evidence for a class action lawsuit to proceed.

Other Potential Complications with These Drugs

In addition to hearing and vision loss, heart problems and possibly melanoma, there are other complications that can arise from using VIAGRA, LEVITRA or Cialis. Perhaps the most common is priapism. This is an erection that lasts an excessively long time — which is why most erectile dysfunction medication commercials say to contact a doctor if you have “an erection lasting more than 4 hours.”

It may be difficult to file a lawsuit against an erectile dysfunction drug manufacturer for a priapism, hearing loss, vision loss or heart problems, since there are warnings on the label and paperwork that comes with the medicine. However, in some cases, it may be possible to file a suit against a doctor for these issues if they didn’t warn you of the potential side effects.

This could be considered a breach of duty of care, and would therefore fall under medical malpractice law. An experienced attorney can provide more information about this kind of lawsuit, and whether your case qualifies.
