WEST PALM BEACH, Fla – A child was injured last week when his bicycle collided with a car. According to police reports, the boy was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center with serious injuries immediately following the accident.
The child was found to be at fault in the accident and will be cited for his role in the crash.
Parents are being urged by officials to remind their children about safe bike riding habits.
Any person on a bicycle should wear the proper safety gear. This includes a helmet, at a minimum, but should also include elbow and knee pads. Long shirt sleeves and long pants add an extra layer of protection as does the proper foot wear.
Bicycles should be outfitted with lights and reflectors to make them more visible in low light. A head light and tail light that flash attract the most attention. Reflectors on wheels and pedals add to the visibility.
Parents should remind their children to ride with traffic and not against it. Any person on a bicycle is considered to be operating a vehicle and is under the same restrictions as a person driving a car. When crossing the road, cyclists should use crosswalks when at all possible.
While this accident was a tragedy, it could have been avoided. Proper attention to safety and an understanding of the rules of the road can keep everyone safe.
