Drive through Miami-Dade any day of the week at any time of the day and you are more likely than not to be caught up in a congested nightmare. Bumper-to-bumper traffic isn’t anything new to the folks who drive through the area. A new app is taking aim at traffic, helping drivers extricate themselves from the snarl.
If you have an iPhone or Android-based smartphone, you can drive easy from now on. Audio Traffic Miami-Dade launched last week, helping travelers avoid snags when practical. We know what you are thinking: Using an app and driving is dangerous. Not so with this new offering. The reports are spoken rather than written. You won’t have to take your eyes off the road for a second.
Reports delivered by the app typically last anywhere between 30 seconds and two minutes. You can set the audio delivery in one of two languages: English or Spanish. The developers of the app can be trusted to deliver timely traffic information. They got their start in radio stations across the country doing the same thing.
According to Audible Broadcasting CEO Roger Koch, people don’t listen to the radio the same way they used to. Drivers don’t want to wait 20 or more minutes for an up-to-date traffic report; they want it now.
As soon as the app is clicked, reports start to play. Once you have listened to the latest traffic news, you can listen to public-service announcements or timely news reports. These reports are provided by Miami-Dade County, a partner in the launch of the new app.
Partnering with the app developers means that the county can use the app for emergency announcement or warnings about in-progress crimes. The Miami-Dade are is the fourth in Florida to get a traffic app. The service debuted in West Palm Beach, Tampa, and Jacksonville earlier this year. Drivers in Orlando and Broward can expect their own version soon.
The app was designed to rely solely on audio in an effort to reduce distracted driving. There are other apps on the market that will give you traffic reports, but none do so without you needing to look at your phone’s screen. If you want to stay away from congestion and get where you are going safely, the Audio Traffic app is essential.
The app can be downloaded from iTunes or Google Play, depending on your specific device.
