The dangers of drunk driving. They are important lessons to learn for young people who may be starting to think about getting their driver’s license for the first time. For children in the Lonedell R-XIV school district, as well as those from surrounding districts, hearing a firsthand account hopefully made a lasting impression.
David Heeb made a visit to middle schoolers and recounted an accident he was involved in more than two years ago. Heeb lived in Fort Lauderdale and worked in South Florida as a principal for a charter school. One morning in the summer of 2015, he was driving to the gym when he noticed a man driving toward him in an erratic manner.
Officers had given up a chase with the man in the interest of public safety. That didn’t stop the driver from plowing into Heeb’s Jeep Cherokee. Heeb tells the story that was told to him because he can’t remember anything from the week before or the week after the crash.
Heeb suffered a broken foot, an injured arm and a cracked hip in the wreck. He showed the students pictures of himself as well as X-rays of his arm. He told stories of physical therapy and the five surgeries it took to repair his body. Heeb’s parting message to the students was to make the right decisions and be good influencers.
