Very few people expect to impact the lives of dozens of others when they turn the ignition and head out onto the open road. That may be exactly what you are doing if you take these actions after having a few too many.
When people choose to drive impaired, their likelihood of causing a vehicle collision is heightened exponentially. Then a collision occurs, it is not only the drivers and passengers that are impacted, but the friends and family of those people as well. The choice to drive while impaired can impact dozens of lives in a single moment.
For many people who have been charged with DUI, victims are merely names on a piece of paper. MADD wants to change that.
Cooperating with local court systems, the group holds Victim Impact Panels (VIP) to show convicted drivers that victims are more than just names, and they are more than just the “other driver.” Along with DUI offender school, courts may order those convicted of DUI to attend one of the panels whether or not the offense resulted in a collision.
The panels are a non-confrontational way for offenders to learn the stories of crime victims. These people volunteer their time in hopes that their stories will make someone think twice about drinking and driving a second or third time. By sharing personal stories, the panel provides offenders with a unique perspective about how drivers’ choices have affected the lives of others.
The panel was created with the sole purpose of showing offenders how their actions have impacted people physically, emotionally, and financially. The panel also shows offenders that it is not only the people in the other car who are affected, but their friends, families, and peers.
If you or someone you know has been ordered to attend a VIP in Miami, you will do so at Southwest High School Auditorium. There is no pre-registration required, and the auditorium is located at 8855 Southwest 50th Terrace, Miami, FL.
