PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla – An accident on an Interstate 95 on-ramp took the life of a young man last week when the vehicle he was driving collided with a tractor trailer.
According to police reports, Mitchell Edward Corzine, 23, was killed when the Hyundai SUV he was riding in into the rear end of a semi parked on the shoulder of the highway near the Martin Highway exit. The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m.
The driver of the vehicle, Sean Marshall, 23, did not see the truck. Marshall was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The truck’s driver was not injured in the accident. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Accidents like this reiterate the importance of paying strict attention to the road ahead. Distracted driving is quickly becoming the number one issue on America’s roadways. More people are using their vehicles as mobile hotspots, rolling eateries and changing stations. In other words, people are doing everything in their vehicles but paying enough attention to the road.
Reports are not clear on exactly why Marshall was so distracted that he did not notice the truck in front of him. It is also not clear why Marshall was close enough to the shoulder to hit the rear of the truck. What is apparent is that this young man’s life, and the lives of his family members, have been drastically changed forever. Paying attention to the road is the one responsibility that we all have when we are behind the wheel, and it is not a responsibility to be taken lightly.
