A trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol is in stable condition at a hospital after a driver lost control of his vehicle and struck the officer who was conducting a traffic stop. The incident occurred on Dolphin Expressway.
According to reports, the driver of the vehicle was traveling westbound and lost control of his vehicle. As he lost control, he spun out and hit the trooper. The trooper, who was standing on the shoulder, was thrown about 30 feet due to the impact. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was treated for a minor injury, as was the passenger in his vehicle.
It is not known why the man lost control of his vehicle, but officers do not believe that alcohol was a factor. In a press release, the department said that the trooper was in stable condition but considered critical. The trooper has already underwent surgeries to repair damage to his spine, face and lower extremities.
A fundraiser on GoFundMe had already raised over $35,000.
Drivers are urged to keep a lookout for officers and workers on the highway. Drivers should stay focused on the road ahead, and they should mind the posted speed limit. When driving through construction zones, drivers should be aware that speed limits may be lowered.
