A San Diego County DUI case that started in 2012 has finally reached its conclusion with the suspect, Jorge Lopez, pleading guilty to a myriad of charges including “…voluntary manslaughter, drunken driving with injury, reckless evasion causing injury, participating in a speed contest causing death, assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. “
Lopez, who was apparently racing another driver, refused to slow down when the police attempted to pull him over. His vehicle reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour before losing control and slamming into a parked vehicle.
It has been reported that Lopez had a prior DUI conviction as well as multiple speeding tickets with one particular citation noting speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. Probably, the saddest part of this case is that Lopez’s actions also served to end the life of his brother-in-law who was a passenger in his vehicle.
Even more disheartening is that the accident and ensuing tragedy were fully preventable and were based upon a series of bad decisions Lopez made that evening. Maybe if he were aware of some startling DUI statistics and the overall effect this incident would have on not only his life, but on the life of his family and extended family, it would have led him to do things differently. Unfortunately, we can’t go back in time and change anything, but it is our hope that the information shared in this post will serve to prevent another family from having to deal with this kind of disaster.
What You Can Do to Avoid a DUI
For Those Under 21:
For Those 21 and Older:
The message the Steinger, Iscoe & Greene family wants to communicate to our community is that DUIs are avoidable. Plan ahead and take into consideration that you may not get away with driving under the influence. At best, you could be subject to a legal roller-coaster that could cost you your driving privileges as well as thousands, if not tens-of-thousands of dollars. If you injure, or worse – kill someone – while operating your vehicle while under the influence, the penalties are exponentially worse.
Sometimes even when you make good decisions, are responsible and take all steps possible to ensure a safe night out, you may still cross paths with another driver who did not elect to take similar precautions causing injury to you or a loved one. Steinger, Iscoe & Greene is here to help navigate the legal aspects of the accident so you can focus on your physical recovery. It is always our hope that our neighbors take preventative measures to ensure safe arrival to their destinations.
