A teenager has been released from the hospital after a boating accident required that he receive treatment for injuries. The accident occurred last week on the Intercoastal Highway. The boy and a friend were rowing in a scull when they were hit and run over by a motor boat.
The boy who was hit was in a state rowing competition and would have spent the day following practicing his rowing. Instead, he was sedated in a hospital bed recovering from injuries sustained in the accident. The teen received a gash to his head and hairline fractures in his back.
The operator of the motor boat said that he had seen several boats on the water but did not see the scull. He reported hearing someone yell for him to look out for the boat just before he hit it. As soon as the driver was aware that he had hit something, he cut his engines. The first thing he did was pull the injured teen onto his boat and apologize.
Witnesses to the accident said that the driver of the motor boat was speeding and driving erratically. Some witnesses said that the driver appeared to be looking at his cell phone while he was operating the boat. The driver told authorities that he couldn’t remember what he had been doing at the time of the accident.
