Selfies. An addiction for some and a perpetual cause of annoyance to others. No matter how you feel about the fast-growing trend, selfies are incredibly popular. They are so popular, in fact, that they are becoming dangerous. We can hear your thoughts…”It’s dangerous to take a picture?” Of course not. The act itself is not a dangerous one, but the situations people are putting themselves in can be.
The selfie craze has led to the deaths of at least 10 people in Russia and more than 100 injuries over just the last year. It has caused the Russian Interior Ministry and police forces around the country to join in on a collaborative campaign called “Safe Selfies.”
Russia is nowhere near the United States, but the selfie craze has hit us just as hard. It may serve many of us well to take a closer look at the campaign and the advice it has to offer. Taking a picture should never put you at the risk of injury or, worse, death.
Russia’s campaign includes images, pamphlets, safety videos, and tips. Selfie signage has been inspired by several real-life events in the country.
“Selfie on railroad tracks is a bad idea if you cherish your life!”
“Selfie with a weapon kills!”
“Selfie under voltage? It isn’t worth it!”
Other signs warn against taking selfies while on or in water, on a roof, with animals, and from on top of train cars. It may seem as though this is all common sense, but people are trying to outdo others in record numbers when it comes to selfies that take the breath away.
If you count yourself solidly among those for whom selfies are virtually an addiction, be careful. The things you are doing and the items you are posing with may seem harmless, but injuries and deaths are occurring at shocking numbers. Keep your common sense about you when posing for your very own portrait.
