MARTIN COUNTY, Fla – A Palm Beach County man was arrested after police pursued him last week. The pursuit ended in a fiery rollover crash that tied up traffic along Interstate 95 for hours. Three people ended up in the hospital as a result of the accident.
The pursuit began in Palm Beach County after a van was reported stolen from a business in Tequesta. The pursuit proceeded northbound on I-95. As a result of the pursuit, the van rolled eight times, landing near the woods along the highway. Michael Kungis, 29, was ejected from the van as it turned over and over. He was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute to be treated for his injuries. He was last listed in critical condition.
The driver of a vehicle that was clipped in the crash and a sheriff’s deputy were also treated as a precaution. Neither person was reported to have been injured.
A criminal history check of Kungis shows that he has previous arrests for trafficking in stolen property and commercial fraud. He was on early release from the state prison system at the time of the accident. Kungis has racked up 47 felony charges in his lifetime. 10 of those charges resulted in convictions. 17 misdemeanor arrests led to seven separate convictions.
Soutbound I-95 was shut down for three hours as a result of the accident. The southbound ramp at Martin Highway was closed as well.
