A young man has been placed under arrest and charged with several felonies following an incident in which two West Palm Beach officers collided with one another. The man, who is reported to be homeless, faces battery on an officer, aggravated battery on an officer, larceny between $300 and $5,000, burglary, dealing in stolen property and vehicle theft. At last report, the man was being held on a $33,000 bail.
According to reports, a witness saw the young man steal an air conditioner from a business in the north end of the city. That witness followed the man and watched as the man tried to sell the air conditioner to a scrap-metal shop. The unit was valued at $1,500.
Police arrived on the scene and the man attempted to leave in a BMW. The man allegedly drove the BMW in the path of a police cruiser that was responding to the scene. That officer was forced to take evasive action and crashed into a second patrol car. The suspect ended up crashing into a median, a pole and finally a vehicle. He then jumped out of the car and ran. He was later apprehended on a bicycle.
As the man was being arrested, he kicked out at an officer, striking the officer in the knee.
