A seven-year-old boy riding a mini-motorcycle was hit by a pickup near his family’s Palm Bay, Florida, home on Wednesday, August 3.
The boy’s mother told FloridaToday.com that she realized too late that her son had taken off on his mini dirt bike. She got word that he’d been hit by a truck when he rode through a stop sign near Timbruce Road Southeast. The boy was then thrown off his Razor Dirt Rocker MX-350, and he rolled across the pavement for 20 feet, suffering broken bones and a concussion.
The boy was airlifted to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he is listed in serious condition.
The boy was not wearing a helmet, and it was not legal for him to ride his bike on the road.
“The mom was at home, speaking with a gentleman, and he just took off,” said Officer Andrew Pidgeon of the Palm Bay Police Department to FloridaToday.com. “She knows he rides up and down the street with it, but that’s illegal … The scooter is not street legal. There’s a warning label right on it that says, ‘Not to be operated on public streets or sidewalks.’”
