On April 12, a man fell from an overpass on Interstate 95. It wasn’t the first accident on or near the overpass that leads drivers to Congress Avenue. The Peninsula Corp. Drive overpass has seen at least six accidents over the course of five years, making it notoriously dangerous.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation, part of the problem is that people aren’t slowing down adequately. They are also not following traffic signs or pavement markings, says FDOT Public Information Director Barbara Kelleher.
In the latest accident, a semi-truck was exiting the southbound lanes just before sunrise. The driver failed to make a right turn, hit the median and overturned. The truck came to rest on the wall of the bridge. A tow truck responded to the scene to clear the accident. The driver stepped over the wall in an attempt to secure the trailer. The man slipped and fell.
Even though the semi-truck driver ha nothing directly to do with the tow truck driver’s accident, the investigation into the incident found that he had been driving for longer than the 11-hour limit and failed to negotiate a right turn. He was cited for both.
FDOT plans to add additional markings to the pavement and signs near the overpass alerting those exiting the highway for the need to slow down sufficiently.
