A Miami-Dade police officer was off duty when he crashed his motorcycle on Interstate 75 in Miami Lakes. The severe accident occurred around 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. Police and fire personnel responded to the scene in an attempt to rescue the officer.
According to reports, the officer was riding his Suzuki motorcycle by himself when he lost control. The man slid off the roadway and hit a guardrail. Those who responded were not sure what caused the officer to lose control, but there were no other vehicles involved in the incident.
Police say that witnesses to the wreck stopped to offer assistance to the victim. The officer was ultimately air lifted to a trauma center where he was listed in critical condition. Although responders don’t know what caused the accident, they were able to discover that the officer was on his way to a charity event when the crash occurred.
The accident caused southbound lanes to be closed for some time as officers completed their investigation. Traffic was diverted off the highway but all lanes were reopened later. The full extent of the officer’s injuries were unknown at the time of the report, but it was known that he lost a leg as a result of the crash.
