It was like something out of a movie. Police officers were conducting work in the area of 29th Avenue and 172nd Street in Miami when they witnessed a car accident. One of the drivers of the vehicles involved took off, fleeing from the scene. Officers gave chase and caught up with the vehicle. It was then that bullets began to fly.
As detectives caught up with the vehicle, they were confronted by two passengers who had exited the vehicle. One or both of the passengers opened fire on the police, turning their vehicle into what news reports called “Swiss cheese.” Witnesses in the area were startled out of bed by the sound of the gunshots.
There were three passengers in total in the vehicle. One of the passengers who exited was wounded by the police who returned fire. Three suspects in the vehicle are now facing a long list of charges. People who are familiar with the neighborhood say that the gunshots were nothing new. The section of the city is known for its frequency of gunfire.
Police say that given the condition of the vehicle following the shootout, they are thankful that their officers weren’t injured. Because its police were involved in the shooting, the department will not be investigating. Instead, the investigation has been turned over to the Florida Department of Law-Enforcement.
