An accident in Miami sent a child to the hospital in critical condition while on his way home from school. According to reports, the boy was the passenger in a vehicle involved in a crash at the intersection of 36th Street and Northwest 22nd Avenue. The child was riding in a Volkswagen Beetle and became trapped under the dashboard during the collision.
The Volkswagen Beetle collided with a Ford Explorer in the intersection. The collision was so severe that the front of the SUV was in the front passenger side of the Beetle. The young boy was transported to Ryder Trauma Center and underwent surgery. The boy’s mother said that he had multiple broken bones and was in critical condition.
The child, a passenger being driven by his grandfather, was fewer than four blocks from his home when the accident occurred. The grandfather was also taken to the hospital and is expected to recover from his injuries. The driver of the SUV did not sustain apparent injuries and remained on scene.
The crash is still being investigated.
It is unclear at this time if the child was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Officials urge people driving with children to not only make sure they are wearing seat belts, but to ensure that they are properly restrained in child safety seats according to state and federal law.
