A man from West Palm Beach decided to swim through a canal earlier in the month instead of being apprehended by officers following a crash that left a woman trapped in his vehicle.
According to reports, the man was traveling north on South Congress Avenue when the collision occurred. He struck a car that was traveling east onto Okeechobee Boulevard. After the collision, the man continued driving, eventually running his car into a nearby canal.
The man exited his car, leaving his female passenger inside. Officers attempted to use a Taser to stop the man, but could not. He ended up swimming through the canal, clambering up the other side and running through a mobile home park. As the man was running, officers assisted the woman in getting out of the car.
The woman told officers that after the crash, she asked to be let out of the car and the driver refused. This led to a charge of false imprisonment in addition to the fleeing the scene charge. The man went to a local hospital to be treated for scratches. Police responded and gave the man a breathalyzer test. He registered 0.1, over the legal limit.
The man was ultimately charged with DUI, false imprisonment, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving without a driver’s license.
