A man has been arrested for DUI manslaughter stemming from a January crash that left a man dead. An Acreage man stands accused of casing the accident and being intoxicated when he did so.
According to police reports, the accused man had traces of marijuana, anti-anxiety medications and pain relievers in his system, along with sedative medications. A toxicologist confirmed that the drugs present in the man’s system impaired his ability to drive safely.
The man was driving southbound on Avocado. He drove over a speed bump, over rumble strips and finally through flashing lights prior to running a stop sign. A witness said the man drove through the intersection at Avocado and Key Lime at full speed.
The victim of the accident was driving eastbound on Key Lime. That driver had the right of way. He struck the accused driver’s car at just under 40 mph. The vehicle rolled onto its driver’s side, and the accused driver’s vehicle was sent into a utility pole. The victim was transported to the hospital where he died the next day.
A court date for the man accused of causing the accident has not been officially released.
