A nine-year-old Lake City, Florida, girl incurred serious injuries on the evening of Sunday, September 11, after she steered an ATV in front of a car and was hit and ejected into a Columbia County roadway.
The Gainesville Sun reports that the accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. in Columbia County as the girl was traveling on the north shoulder of SE County Road 18. Around the 4000 block, the girl attempted to turn into a driveway and pulled into the path of a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu driven by a 50-year-old Lake Butler woman. The woman tried to avoid the crash and veered right into a ditch, but her driver side door caught the ATV and dragged it 101 feet.
“The impact caused [the ATV’s] right tire to get caught on [the Chevy’s] left front tire and fender,” said Trooper J. De Jesus in an accident report.
The young girl, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was transported to Shands at the University of Florida. The driver of the Malibu was not hurt, nor was her 61-year-old passenger.
Charges are pending in this accident.
