Accidents like this, while tragic, serve as reminders to us all.
If you are a walker, jogger or runner, always be aware of your surroundings, no matter the time of day or night. If you are going to cross the street, be sure to look both ways, and do not cross near any objects that could be obstructing the view of drivers. Look for marked crosswalks with signals to ensure your safety as you cross.
Any pedestrian at night should be dressed in light or brightly-colored clothing. This type of clothing makes it easier for drivers to see you. If you do not have bright clothing, a piece of reflective tape across your back and chest will make you more visible. Consider carrying a glow stick or wearing glowing bracelets on your wrists. Get creative. Anything you can do to make yourself more visible will keep you safer.
Drivers should be sure to pay attention to their surroundings as well. Never assume that you will not see a pedestrian after the sun goes down. Always scan the area surrounding your vehicle as you drive, and look an extra time or two as you cross an intersection. Drivers and pedestrians must be respectful of one another in order to keep everyone safe.
