Hurricane Irma barreled into South Florida over the weekend and caused the expected damage. From downed trees to blown-off rooftops, the storm came and went with ferocity. Although many residents evacuated, some chose to stay.
The state’s governor warned people of the risks of riding out the storm and hunkering in place. He strongly advised residents that were expected to be impacted by the storm to leave. One of the reasons why? Potential injury and even death.
One such example was the death of a man in Monroe County. The man was in his pickup truck, transporting a generator when Irma’s winds struck. The driver lost control of his truck and lost his life as a result of the accident. There were two other deaths reported over the weekend and it is expected that more will be told of in coming days.
Beyond southern Florida, mandatory evacuations were issued throughout the state. Voluntary evacuations were ordered in South Carolina and Georgia ahead of the pending storm surge. Shelters quickly filled, forcing evacuees to travel further north or make the dangerous decision to stay home and hope for the best.
