Lisa Dwyer, 49, has been arrested according to the Florida Department of Financial Services’ Division of Insurance Fraud (DIF). Dwyer is a former insurance agent who had been working for Southeast Insurance Agency. She lost her job after being accused of stealing more than $20,000 in premiums from her clients.
The theft of monies occurred during an eight-month window and was first noticed by the owner of Southeast Insurance Agency. After discovering that Dwyer had been stealing funds, he called and reported her to DIF. An investigation, conducted with the Department’s Agent and Agency Services division, led officials to discover that more than 50 customers had checks stolen. Clients lost all or part of their monies to Dwyer’s alleged theft. Dwyer told investigators that she kept the money for personal use, but that some of the stolen funds had been used to make actual payments on insurance policies.
After terminating Dwyer’s employment, the owner of the insurance agency assured victims that their policies would be brought current at no additional cost to them. Each policy that was affected has been paid for and brought up-to-date. The owner of the agency took it upon himself to make things right, he was not ordered to do so by authorities.
Dwyer was charged with misappropriation/diversion of fiduciary funds, a felony, and booked into the Broward County Jail. Her bond was set at $3,500. If Dwyer is convicted of her crimes, she faces up to 15 years in prison and fines up to $10,000. Whether or not Dwyer will be forced to make restitution to her ex-employer will be up to a judge.
