FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla – Last Friday, a report of a suspicious item caused the evacuation of a Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport terminal. It also resulted in delays for passengers who sat on benches and when bench space ran out, on the ground, as officers swept through the terminal.
Passengers were understandably frustrated by the situation that began because of a piece of unattended luggage. After a thorough search, investigators found that there was nothing dangerous located inside of the luggage. While some people were angry at being delayed and uninformed, others expressed relief at being taken away from possible danger.
Those waiting for their luggage after deboarding planes were forced to evacuate. Once the investigation was complete, passengers were permitted to return for their luggage and flights were able to take off and land again. There were no further incidents at the airport after the initial scare.
Officials caution passengers and visitors to the airport to keep their eyes open. Just as an anonymous person did Friday, the best way to prevent an incident is to be alert. If you notice a piece of luggage sitting alone or any type of unattended package, bring it to the attention of the nearest airport employee.
In the event that a package or luggage is found to be suspicious, follow the directions that you are given by airport staff and emergency personnel. No matter how you are delated or how frustrating the situation may be, it truly is a case of better safe than sorry.
