Miami’s dining scene was changed in the most tragic of ways early Saturday morning when a driver struck two pedestrians, killing one.
At approximately 2 a.m. Saturday morning, the St. Petersburg DUI squad attempted to make a stop on a 2015 Dodge Charger. The rental car was observed to be speeding as it came off of the interstate and onto Fourth Avenue N.
According to reports, the driver, 25-year old Jason Lanard Mitchell, refused to stop for officers. Due to the crowded area, officers immediately ceased the pursuit. Mitchell, however, did not cease running.
Mitchell continued speeding down the roadway, running several red lights before running down chef Aaron Davis and his co-worker, Brian Lee LaFrance. Davis, 31, and LaFrance, 28, were crossing the street in a marked crosswalk and had the green light. The two men were heading to a parking garage after getting off of work.
The impact caused Davis to be flung over the roof of the vehicle and onto a sidewalk on Second Street. LaFrance was sideswiped and landed on the pavement.
After striking the pedestrians, the vehicle ran into concrete pillars lining the intersection, removing the front right wheel of the car. The car stopped after it knocked down one of the pillars.
Mitchell and his 27-year-old passenger both fled the scene, running into the Push Ultra Lounge where they were later apprehended. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. LaFrance was treated and released from a local hospital.
Mitchell tried to escape custody a second time while taking a breath test at police headquarters. He is ultimately charged with several crimes, including DUI manslaughter, aggravated fleeing and eluding, vehicular homicide, DUI serious bodily injury, and leaving the scene of a crash involving death and DUI.
With a history of arrests for drug possession, fleeing police, and grand theft auto, Mitchell was held at Pinellas County Jail with a bail of $60,500. The passenger, Oliver, was given a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana.
Davis leaves behind a pregnant wife, son, and unborn son along with countless friends and relatives. These people’s lives are changed forever thanks to Mitchell.
