On September 24, a man from the Lake-Worth area crashed into a canal. The teenager in his car was killed in the accident. Following the crash, the man was tested for alcohol and it was discovered that he had close to three times the legal limit in his blood.
According to reports, the man was driving a pickup truck just before 8 p.m. He was traveling east on Northwest First Street. The man drove through an intersection, failing to yield, and crashed into a guardrail that separated the street from the canal. The truck went into the water and was quickly submerged. Investigators noted that there was no indication that the man had applied his brakes at any point.
There were seven passengers in the pickup truck at the time of the crash. Only one person was killed. Two people were rescued from the canal after the accident. As rescuers were pulling people from the water, alligators were noted to be within 100 feet of the dive team. Three people in total were transported to a local hospital. The driver received only minor injuries.
The driver was charged with driving without a valid license and DUI manslaughter.
