Our lawyers at Steinger, Iscoe & Greene will always regret hearing about accidents involving pedestrians. It is even more heartbreaking when those pedestrians are children. Traffic signals, stop signs and crosswalks were created to keep those traveling on the roadways safe. Drivers who choose to operate a vehicle and endanger innocent citizens by neglecting the rules of the road will likely face harsh penalties, like the suspect charged earlier this week.
Agustin Morales, 33, was sentenced to a year behind bars, after pleading guilty to misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Morales fatally struck Juan Andres Ruiz, 3, while he was walking alongside his mother and her baby, on their way to the school bus in Encinitas. According to officials, Morales may have rolled past a stop sign and then into a bike lane. Ruiz died on the way to the hospital after becoming pinned under Morales vehicle and sustaining critical injuries.
Our thoughts are with Juan Andres Ruiz’s family in this difficult time. No amount of financial compensation can fill the void of losing a child in a horrific crash, however we believe it is one of the ways families are able to move forward, gain closure and heal.
