PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – It is hard for most people to imagine being abused by those that they love and trust. Sadly, this is what happened to a teenage girl in Port St. Lucie.
The girl who has not been named due to her juvenile status at the time of the abuse, moved in with Rob and Marie Johnson when she was just 13. The child’s mother passed away, and she moved to Port St. Lucie from Colorado to live with the couple, now ages 44 and 43, respectively.
The abuse began soon after the girl moved in. The young teenager was told that she would have to have sexual intercourse with them in order to be part of the family. Over the course of five years, the girl was physically and sexually abused by the pair. Rob Johnson went so far as insisting the girl call him “master.”
It was next to impossible for the girl to alert anyone that the couple was abusing her. The duo homeschooled the child, denied her access to the phone, and was given lines to rehearse should she ever be questioned by medical professionals. Rob, a cousin of the child’s mother, forced the girl to wear a ring signifying his ownership over her.
The abuse came to light after the girl’s grandmother bought her an airline ticket to Ohio. The girl, now a 21-year-old woman, resides in Indiana. She came forward after speaking with other survivors of sexual assault. The pair were arrested last Tuesday, and each was charged with felony sexual assault. Both were freed from custody after paying bail.
Detective Daniel Herrington said in a press conference, “This is one of the most heinous crimes we’ve seen sexually in a long time.”
