A child was killed last week while crossing Lantana Road. According to officials, the boy was playing “chicken” with oncoming vehicles. He was struck by one of those vehicles and lost his life. The child was only 8 years old.
A friend of the family said that the child may have been coaxed into playing the game by the older children he was with at the time. After the boy was hit by a vehicle, the children he was playing with ran from the scene. This according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident happened at approximately 6:20 p.m. last Wednesday. As the children darted across the road, the young child was struck by a pickup truck. The 29-year-old driver who hit the child remained on scene. While it is believed that the children were playing chicken, that fact has not been confirmed by investigators.
Officials urge that people not dart in and out of roadways, no matter their age. Visibility is low in the evening and oncoming traffic may not have time to stop. Tragedies such as this in which a young child lost his life are entirely preventable.
