A man was arrested in Fort Lauderdale Thursday and police believe he is responsible for a carjacking. The man was not taken into custody easily; he led police on a chase before crashing the vehicle he was driving.
According to reports of the incident, the man approached another from behind. He grabbed the victim’s shoulder and led that victim to believe that he had a gun. As the victim ran away, the man approached a pair of women. The suspect demanded that the women hand over the phones and keys to their vehicle. The man then jumped in their SUV and drove off.
As police responded to the scene, they gave chase to the SUV on Interstate 95. The man continued to flee until he crashed near Moonlight Diner on Cypress Creek Road. The man jumped from the SUV following the crash and ran on foot. Police were able to catch the man and took him into custody.
The SUV was severely damaged in the incident, but none of the victims sustained injury. One police officer sustained a cut to the forehead. The vehicle was towed away from the scene of the accident and the suspect was arrested. He has been charged with fleeing and eluding, as well as armed carjacking.
