You expect to see the occasional deer on the road. Maybe you’ve even had to swerve to avoid hitting a stray cat. What most, if any, people don’t expect to see in southern Florida are cattle converging upon a roadway.
According to police reports, several people were forced to come to a halt on a highway just west of Daytona Beach. A man was driving down the highway when he collided with another vehicle. The vehicle careened into the man after hitting a cow that was in the middle of the road. The man whose car was struck died as a result of the collision.
The man who lost his life also hit one of the cattle. A third animal was struck by semi truck. The two other drivers involved in the incident were not injured. Police report that all three of the animals struck lost their lives. It was not immediately clear why the cattle were in the roadway or where they had escaped from.
While this incident may have been unavoidable, police urge drivers to use caution on roadways, especially in the dark of night. Seeing for distances can be difficult and reduce a driver’s ability to react appropriately.
