Shortly before Christmas Day, a person lost their life and another was injured after participating in a motorcycle race ended in a multi-vehicle collision. The crash occurred in West Miami-Dade.
According to police, two motorcyclists were racing down Southwest Eighth Street just before 2:00 p.m. As the racers passed Southwest 122nd Avenue, one crashed into the other and then the motorcycles were sent into two vehicles. Both of the riders were thrown from their bikes as a result of the collision with the vehicles.
One of the motorcyclists lost their life at the scene of the wreck. The other motorcyclist suffered debilitating injuries. That rider was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be treated for an amputation. It was unknown how fast the motorcycles were traveling at the time of their accident or what caused them to crash into one another.
Police did not report on any other injuries in the accident. It was unknown whether the two vehicles that were struck were occupied at the time of the crash. It was also not immediately known how extensive the damage to the two vehicles was.
Officials urge those riding motorcycles to remember that they are to obey the rules of the road. Racing, no matter how open the roadway, is not permitted. Driving motorcycles in a reckless manner is not only dangerous for the riders, but for others they are sharing the road with.
