If you are like some people, you’ve been done holiday shopping for weeks. You are a go-getter and you’re set to sit back and relax while others scramble for last minute gifts. Or, maybe you’re one of the scramblers. You have dozens of people on your shopping list and only a few more days to find the perfect gift.
Whether you are in a rush or all of your packages are neatly wrapped and ready to be given, it’s important that you know about the most dangerous toys of 2017. If you’ve shopped and purchased one, it would be a good idea to return it in favor of a different gift. If you haven’t even started shopping yet, avoid them.
When fidget spinners were first released, they were incredibly difficult to find, leaving children begging for one of the spinning toys. Now you can easily find one at virtually any store you walk into. The problem with fidget spinners is that they contain parts that pose serious choking hazards. Avoid buying cheap fidget spinners to save money. In fact, you may want to just skip out on buying a fidget spinner at all.
Imaging being able to kick your heels back and skate along. These “skates” are the bane of middle school everywhere. You can be sure your child’s teacher won’t appreciate them and may even confiscate them. Not to mention, they pose an extreme risk of fall injuries.
What? You can turn your little one into Wonder Woman with an easily-found toy sword? Sounds great. Except for the fact that these toys pose the risk of blunt force trauma and facial injuries. You may be better off making a sword out of cardboard or foam.
Spiderman is incredibly popular among people of all ages and so are drones. Combine the two and you have one of the hottest gifts of the year. Sadly, the hottest gift is also one of the more dangerous. The rotating blades on the toy can injure various parts of the body, including the eyes.
With the popularity of The Walking Dead and other zombie shows and games, your child will undoubtedly love the Nerf Zombie crossbow. Unfortunately, the toy used a pressurized system to release its darts. If a child isn’t paying attention to where they are aiming or if a little one crosses their path as they are shooting, injuries can happen. Skip this toy for the sake of safety.
You can find this toy at sporting good and home improvement stores. It is said to be safe for all ages. It is essentially a strap that is secured between two trees and walked across. Not a big deal if it works properly and isn’t hung too high. It is a big deal, however, if someone is entangled in the strap and strangled.
This cute and colorful toy is sold on eBay. It was originally sold through Hallmark and features a Disney theme. It was found that the fabric on the rings of the toy can detach, posing a choking risk for the children it was intended for. There are no such warnings on the label.
Available at Toys “R” Us and other retailers, this musical instrument is designed for children one year old and up. The rod that is used with the instrument is rigid and poses a choking risk for little ones who are apt to put things in their mouths. You really didn’t want to listen to all that noise anyway.
How cute! A toy pony that your child can pull along. Unfortunately, the manufacturers may not have considered that the 19-inch string used to pull the toy could easily be wrapped around the neck of a small child. Avoid this toy that is sold on Amazon.
Little ones love babydolls. They hold them, carry them and even groom them. It doesn’t tell you on the label of these dolls sold at Toys “R” Us and Target that the ponytail holders and clothing are removable. If your child takes these things off the doll and puts them in their mouth, they may choke.
No one wants to buy a child a dangerous gift for the holidays. If you have any of these toys waiting under your tree or were considering buying one, choose something else instead.
