People don’t expect an encounter with an alligator to take place when they are driving, but that is exactly what happened to a woman in Sarasota County last week. The woman was driving down Interstate 75 when she came upon the animal.
According to reports, the woman was driving down the Interstate at approximately 9:15 p.m. when she saw an animal dart in front of her car. She initially thought it was a fox, and she had no way to avoid the collision. After she struck the animal, the woman’s SUV spun and then flipped at least six times.
The woman was relatively unhurt in the accident, but the same could not be said for the alligator that lost its life in the collision. The SUV was totaled. The driver of the SUV was able to get out of the vehicle with assistance from witnesses who remained on scene. It was then that the woman was told that the animal she hit was an alligator.
The driver, a mother of four, was not as surprised that she survived the crash as she was to find out that she struck an alligator. Officials say that these accidents rarely occur. People are far more likely to hit a deer or even a cow in the road than an alligator.
