The 14th victim of the nursing home tragedy in Hollywood, Florida has been named. The woman, who shared a room at the nursing home with her husband, lost her life on October 9.
Sean Greene is representing the family of the 12th victim in what has been called one of the worst tragedies resulting from Hurricane Irma. The Hollywood Hills nursing home lost power, causing the facility’s HVAC system to shut down. The building reached extreme temperatures and patients were not appropriately moved from the facility. As a result, 14 people have now lost their lives.
The 13th victim, a 95-year-old woman, died on October 8. The tragedy is now part of a criminal investigation being undertaken by Hollywood Police and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. It has been said that as time passes, it is becoming difficult to attribute the deaths to the overheated nursing home.
Family members say that the 14th victim survived the hurricane and the events that unfolded on September 13th but ultimately developed pneumonia, a blood infection and respiratory distress. The woman’s husband was also a victim of the incident, losing his life when the center overheated.
In the wake of the investigation, the nursing home has been closed. The facility laid off its more than 200 workers, and the state pulled its operating license.
