Truck Driver Sues After Being Severely Burned at Florida Gas Station

September 30, 2011

A gasoline truck driver who was severely burned in an explosion at a St. Augustine, Florida, gas station on August 19 has sued the property owners.

The explosion occurred while the 61-year-old man, a resident of Fort McCoy, Florida, was filling up the station’s tank with gas at 215 Florida 16. As he worked to add 7,800 gallons of fuel to one tank, it overflowed and caught fire, according to Jacksonville.com.

A horrific explosion erupted, sending the man to the burn center at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Flames and smoke rose hundreds of feet in the sky, causing some nearby residents to be evacuated from their homes.

The victim alleges that that the gas station didn’t comply with regulations that govern the prevention of accidental spills, instead using a “more antiquated” method of storing gasoline in tanks above the ground. He was also unable to locate a gauge that told him how much gasoline was already inside the tank.

“He is a very high-spirited, exuberant man, but he’s lost the use of both of his arms and is in a great deal of pain and needs 24-hour nursing care,” said the man’s attorney. “Our client’s job was to fill the tank if there was sufficient capacity, and the [property owner’s] job was to provide the necessary means and assurances that there was capacity. They didn’t do their job.”

8 People Injured by Lightening Strike at Florida SeaWorld

August 17, 2011

Eight people were injured when lightening struck at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday, August 16.

According to The Miami Herald, the incident occurred at SeaWorld’s Discovery Cove water park — an attraction where tourists can swim with dolphins – during the afternoon, when three guests and five employees were hurt while standing at the Adventure Photo Shop.

The eight victims were not struck directly by lightening but five of those who reported injury were taken to a hospital as a precaution. The three others were taken to a local urgent care facility.

All of the victims were reportedly conscious and alert following the strike and none suffered life-threatening injuries.

On Tuesday night, two of the employees remained hospitalized.

Florida has been determined to be the state that sees the most lightening annually. WJLA reports, however, that Missouri has actually experienced the largest number of lightening-related fatalities this year. Nineteen people in the U.S. have died so far this year due to lightening, a figure that WJLA notes is “creeping closer every day to the historical average of 55 fatalities per year.”

Orlando Theme Park Workers Dies in Fall

July 4, 2011

A 30-year-old employee of the Magical Midway Thrill Park in Orlando, Florida, died on Saturday when he fell from a ride that he was working on.

The man, who also worked as a wrestler, had been performing maintenance on the Star Flyer, which is a swing that takes riders hundreds of feet in the air at up to 55 mph, at the time of the accident.

While hooked into a harness about 90 feet above the ground, the man was apparently struck by a counter weight when the ride began to move. He then fell six feet but was caught and suspended in the air by his harness.

“He was strapped in,” a rescue worker told News4Jax.com. “He was following safety precautions.”

Some guests visiting the park say they saw the man fall and could see him bleeding.

Authorities were able to bring his body down about 45 minutes after the accident. News4Jax.com reports that he suffered severe traumatic injuries.

“It is under investigation,” Mark Smothers, spokesman for Orange County Fire Rescue told CFNews13. “We will turn it over to [the Florida Department of Agriculture], and the sheriff’s office will treat it as a death investigation.”

The ride was not open to the public when the man fell. Though the park reopened on Sunday, the Star Flyer remains closed.

The park is located at 7001 International Drive in Orlando.

The accident is being investigated by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

4 Burned in Bananas Foster Explosion at Florida Restaurant

June 15, 2011

When a bananas foster dessert exploded Saturday night at the Ozona Blue Grilling Co. in Palm Harbor, Florida, four family members from Windermere were burned. Two of the burn victims–women aged 25 and 56–had to be taken by helicopter to Tampa General Hospital.

Palm Harbor Fire and Rescue spokesperson Liz Monforti told Tampa Bay’s Fox affiliate that a waiter used too much alcohol when making the sweet dish, which is traditionally prepared tableside in a skillet with bananas, butter, and cinnamon, doused with rum that’s then ignited, and served atop ice cream.

The flaming liquor reportedly spread quickly and spilled onto a family sitting near the dessert. The family included a couple who were dining with their son, his fiancée, and a friend, according to TampaBay.com.

A 25-year-old elementary school teacher was the most badly wounded, suffering first and second degree burns when her dress caught on fire. She remains hospitalized.

“It’s going to be a long time for her to heal,” said Monforti.

An off-duty fireman who happened to be at the restaurant during the explosion provided first aid for each of the four victims.

Two of the people who were burned—males aged 25 and 58–refused to be treated for burns on their knees.
