Florida baseball pitcher involved in DUI crash

March 26, 2012

In jail today after last week’s DUI hit-and-run accident that left a motorcyclist hospitalized in critical condition, a Tampa Bay Rays minor-league pitcher faces multiple charges, reports Sporting News.

Facing seven charges from the incident on Thursday, he remains in the Charlotte County Jail with his bail set at more than $1 million.

The motorcyclist was struck from behind by the baseball pitcher’s SUV. The biker fell from the motorcycle, and his head was run over by the SUV.

The pitcher left the scene of the accident and was later arrested and charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident. He blew a .180 blood-alcohol level on a field sobriety test.

The ball player has a suspended driver’s license and does not own a vehicle, according to his agent.

Nevertheless, he was driving a Dodge Durango when he struck the Harley Davidson from behind on U.S. 41 in Port Charlotte, the Florida Highway Patrol report states.

The motorcyclist remains at Lee Memorial Hospital in Fort Myers with broken ribs, several broken bones in his back, a broken wrist, road rash covering both arms, hemorrhaging in his brain, and a collapsed lung.

Two people injured in motorcycle crash

February 13, 2012

A 44-year-old St. Petersburg woman is hospitalized in critical condition, after the Harley-Davidson that she was riding on crashed Saturday night, reports Old Northeast-Downtown St. Pete Patch.

The 44-year-old woman was the passenger on a Harley-Davidson that crashed on U.S. 301.

She was riding on the back of a 2005 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by a 45-year-old man of Riverview, at about 8:15 p.m., on U.S. 301, just south of Boyette Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that a white Mustang may have cut in front of the motorcycle, while making an “improper lane change,” or the Mustang “violated the motorcycle’s right of way.”

The motorcycle overturned, and the Mustang drove off from the accident.

Both the woman and man suffered serious injuries and were taken to Tampa General Hospital.

Neither was wearing a helmet, according to the FHP accident report.

Florida Bicyclist Dies in Collision with Sheriff’s Deputy on Motorcycle

September 28, 2011

A 61-year-old man died in Malabar, Florida, on Tuesday morning when his bicycle collided with a motorcycle operated by a sheriff’s deputy.

The fatal accident occurred around 7:20 a.m. when the bicyclist, who was traveling east on the shoulder of Malabar Road on his blue Schwinn, reportedly turned left into the path of the officer’s eastbound Honda. A witness told FloridaToday.com that the bicyclist may have been attempting to change directions.

The motorcycle hit the bicycle squarely on the left side, throwing the bicyclist onto the leftbound shoulder. The deputy, who had been traveling under the 55 mph speed limit, was thrown into a grassy ditch.

Following the crash, officials thought the bicyclist suffered only a minor leg injury, but he died an hour later after suffering a heart attack. He had not been wearing a helmet at the time. The man was transported to the hospital by helicopter.

The 39-year-old officer, who has been serving the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years, walked away from the wreck with a minor arm fracture and scrapes, for which he was treated at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

“As law enforcement officers . . . our offices are our car, our motorcycle,” said Sergeant Kim Montes. “In the emergency field, when we’re involved in one of these crashes, it’s upsetting to us. This is just a tragedy here.”
