Boat rolls over, operator dies

March 28, 2012

In Putnam County, Florida, there was a fatal airboat accident on Tuesday morning on the Rodman Reservoir, reports News 4 Jax.

The 64-year-old operator of the vessel died in the accident. A 51-year-old man, who was visiting from New York, suffered minor injuries. He was taken to Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka.

The two men had planned to go fishing. At about 8:30 a.m. after the men launched an airboat at the Orange Springs boat ramp, the accident occurred.

After traveling about a half-mile into the reservoir, the airboat took a sharp right turn and rolled over. The men were thrown into the water.

The New York man was wearing a life jacket and held on to the other man, using a cooler to help him hold his friend above the water while they both yelled for help.

Someone in a canoe heard them and paddled out to help. The New York man clung to the canoe and to his friend as the canoeist paddled toward shore.

As they neared shore, a pontoon boat arrived, and the occupants put the men onto their boat and took them to shore.

The operator was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy will be performed.

Law enforcement officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are still attempting to locate the airboat.

Key West speedboat racing ends tragic week

November 14, 2011

Two more speedboat racers were injured in a crash during Sunday’s finale of the Key West Super Boat World Championships, according to the Miami Herald.  And one more racer died on Saturday.

Adding to the two deaths on Wednesday, a man of University Park, Florida, was fatally injured when his boat rolled near an offshore turn on Friday. He died early Saturday at Miami-Jackson Memorial Hospital.

The two injured on Sunday were both from New Jersey. They smacked into a wave during Sunday’s final race.

The Somers Point man was treated at Lower Keys Medical Center while the Hammonton man was evacuated to Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital with a torn ear and possible concussion, according to a race spokesman.

Even as the speedboat racers tried to outrun each other on the bumpy, six and one-half mile course, the three fatalities were a concern Sunday.

The throttleman on CMS—the Superboat Unlimited world champion owner–said, “There were a lot of things on our minds besides boat racing. It was a great victory for the team, and we’re all excited about it. But we’re also sad at the same time for our buddies and their families.”

“Everybody felt that’s what they would have wanted, was for us to go race. That’s really kind of a celebration for them,” the Team CRC throttleman for a second-place winner said.

Tearing up, he added: “And you know they’re running Godspeed up in heaven.”

2 die in Key West, Florida, powerboat races

November 11, 2011

Two Missouri friends lost their lives on Wednesday during the first of three race days at the Key West World Championship, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The two who died were a 74-year-old man and a 47-year-old man, from Sunrise and Kaiser, Missouri, respectively.

CBS St. Louis KMOX News Radio reports that their 46-foot catamaran Big Thunder Marine went airborne at high speed and came down so hard that its right front hull was severely damaged on the third lap of Wednesday’s race inside Key West Harbor.

Superboat International President John Carbonell said he witnessed the crash, which occurred adjacent to a spectator area.

“He was probably going about 130 mph and the boat’s propellers were barely in the water,” Carbonell said. “The boat apparently caught some air and went bow (front) up; straight into the air, came down and went backwards.”

Carbonell said the force of the boat coming down was powerful and crushing.

Despite the accident and rescue efforts, the race later continued.

Rescue personnel were called in to extract the offshore powerboat racers, the Florida Keys News Bureau reports.

About 200 racers gathered under a large tent in the dry pits Thursday to honor the two who had died.

Wearing Big Thunder shirts, team members sat near the older man’s wife. She clutched a large bouquet of flowers during the memorial ceremony.

Racing will continue as scheduled on Friday with the finals set for Sunday, Super Boat International officials said.

Young Girl’s Boating Accident Blamed on Florida Drought

September 14, 2011

A nine-year-old girl was injured in a boating accident on the Suwannee River on Sunday, September 11, and authorities say they believe that falling water levels are to blame.

The Live Oak girl was injured when the 14-foot-long jon boat she was traveling in hit some rocks and ejected her near the Dowling Park boat ramp, reports the The Gainesville Sun. The newspaper says that the rocks are “normally well below the surface of the river, but instead are at or just below the surface this month because of the ongoing drought.”

The girl received lacerations on her knees and face, and required stitches. Three other people on the boat were uninjured, including the girl’s four-year-old sister, 45-year-old father, and her step-uncle.

“We started to hit record lows this spring in the upper Suwannee River, but it takes longer for us to reach records on the lower portions of the river,” said Suwannee River Water Management District hydrologist Megan Wetherington. “We haven’t gotten any type of tropical recharge, which is what we need to bring things up quickly at this time of year.”

Florida Man Sentenced in Son’s Fatal Boat Crash

August 31, 2011

A Middleburg, Florida, man was sentenced on Tuesday, August 30, on reckless boating charges in connection with a fatal boat crash earlier this year that killed his 17-year-old son, Travis Hanner, and his son’s 15-year-old girlfriend, Halee Mickey.

Fifty-year-old Ted Hanner pleaded no contest to reckless boating charges and was sentenced to 18 days time served and fined $400 for the February 11, 2011 incident. He was also ordered to continue counseling for an unrelated DUI arrest from two months ago.

The Florida Times-Union reports that the accident occurred on President’s Day on Black Creek near the Knight’s Boat Ramp and Marina facility.

The two teens were seated in the bow of the 1985 Baja bass boat when the man left control of the boat in order to pump the fuel bulb so that more fuel could get to the motor. The boat then veered toward the riverbank and crashed into a tree, causing blunt force trauma to both teens, who were students at Middleburg High School. Both teens died at the accident site, and the elder Hanner was taken to Shands Jacksonville Hospital with minor injuries.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
