Tampa Bay college student killed in crash

January 6, 2012

A 19-year-old Florida College sophomore from California was killed in a wreck Wednesday afternoon, reports the Tampa Bay Times.

She and her 20-year-old best friend were on their way to a shop to get some hot tea. The best friend was driving and ran a red light at the intersection of Chancey Road and Country Road 54 in Zephyrhills. Her 2003 Toyota Echo was hit by a tow truck hauling a Jeep SUV.

The Toyota driver was taken to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition. The tow truck driver was not injured. The 19-year-old passenger died at the scene.

“She was very bubbly, very energetic,” said her mother in California, who was informed of her daughter’s death Wednesday night.

The mother said that her daughter was a self-assured, confident young woman who wanted to be a photojournalist.

“She was very, very much her own person,” she said.

“This is quite a blow to us,” said Ralph Walker, public relations and alumni director at Florida College. It’s a small, close-knit community of 500 students. The school has not lost a current student in such a sudden way for nearly 20 years, if not more.

Walker said that school is back in session on Tuesday and that grief counselors will be on hand for students.

Elderly Florida couple killed in double accident

January 4, 2012

A Florida couple was hit and killed instantly by a pickup truck on New Year’s Eve in Lee County, Alabama, reports WSFA News.

The couple had been visiting relatives in Alexander City, Alabama, and were on their way home to Live Oak, Florida, when the accident occurred.

Around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the 84-year-old man and his 81-year-old wife had either stopped or drastically slowed their Lexus sedan near the 1100 block of Highway 280.

The driver of a Ford Taurus was unable to avoid their car and rear ended it. After this first accident, the Florida couple got out of their car to survey the damage. Their car was still in the roadway.

In a second accident, a Ford pickup truck crashed into the couple and their vehicle. The couple was killed instantly.

Both the driver of the truck and of the Taurus were taken to the East Alabama Medical Center for treatment.

Alabama State Troopers and the Lee County Coroner’s Office are still investigating the accident.

Even if an accident is over, people may still be in danger, especially if it occurs on a busy highway. If possible, get the people and the vehicle off the road and onto a shoulder or median, law enforcement officers remind drivers.

1 dies on I-95 in fiery wreck, which causes major damage to interstate

January 2, 2012

The driver of a log truck lost control and the vehicle overturned, dumping its load across the highway on Thursday at 3:30 a.m. in Port Orange, according to the News-Journal.

This accident sparked a chain reaction collision involving a U.S. Mail tractor-trailer, a passenger car, and a dual trailer semi carrying canisters of methyl bromide.

The chemical-laden truck slammed into the back of the overturned log truck and burst into flames. The pesticide was released in a toxic cloud that caused hazardous materials officials to issue a warning for nearby residents to stay inside their homes.

The driver of the chemical truck, a 68-year-old Neptune Beach man, died at the scene. The five other occupants of the other vehicles were all taken to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach with minor injuries.

This deadly four-vehicle accident closed the damaged highway for about 21 hours. It destroyed a 100-foot stretch of the road’s asphalt, which costs about $92,000 to repair, according to Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman April Heller.

“There was no damage to the mail,” U.S. Postal Service spokesman Earl C. Artis said. Another semi cab picked up the sealed postal trailer and continued on its way.
