Florida man charged in crash that ended 2 lives
November 4, 2011
A 19-year-old man from DeBary, Florida, was charged Tuesday with the death of two teenagers in a single-vehicle crash. He is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, and one count of reckless driving, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal.
His arrest comes nine-months after the accident that killed two teens in a wreck along Fort Florida Road in DeBary. The man was the driver of a 2001 Nissan Xterra that was going nearly double the posted speed limit.
One of the teens killed was riding on the exterior of the vehicle, or “car-surfing,” as it careened out of control, a sheriff’s spokesman said. He fell off and ended up in a ditch and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
The other teen that was killed was a passenger in the sports utility vehicle. When it flipped, he was unable to get out before it burst into flames. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Video that one of the other passengers had recorded on his cell phone helped investigators determine what had happened.
“Hopefully, if one good thing comes out of this, it’s for other kids to look at it and realize how precious life is . . . and help them realize you are vulnerable,” a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office said. “Too often, kids think they’re bullet-proof, and in a fraction of a second, tragedy strikes and people’s lives are ruined.”
